Want to speed up the binding process when hand-stitching your binding to the back of your quilt? Learn how hand quilting thread makes the binding process faster and easier!

5 Reasons to Use Hand Quilting Thread for Binding

A lot of hand quilting thread's magic lies in its glace finish, which is a smooth, glossy treatment applied to sewing thread to reduce tangling and knots by creating a slippery surface. Here's how that glace finish benefits the hand binding process:

  1. Hand quilting thread is made to not tangle. This means you can cut longer lengths of thread to use for binding. (I've cut up to 30" of thread at a time!). Because you're working with longer lengths of thread, you'll spend less time cutting new pieces of thread, tying knots, and burying threads.

  2. The coating on the hand quilting thread helps the thread glide easily through layers of fabric and batting so you can bind faster and potentially without using Wonder Clips or a thimble.

  3. Because the thread will not snag within the layers while sewing, it also reduces strain on your hands and wrists. No more stiff fingers or wrist pain after binding your quilts!

  4. Hand quilting thread is strong and is made to be tugged and pulled through layers of fabric without breaking. This means you don't need to worry about your thread breaking or fraying during the process.

  5. The thread's strength tightly secures the binding to your quilt, ensuring it will last through years of washing and wear.

Hand quilting thread comes in a variety of colors, just like sewing-weight fabric. So you can choose thread that matches your quilt backing to make your stitches invisible. (I usually stick with white, gray, or black thread, but I also own pink and aqua just in case!)
