How to Turn Any Quilt Block Into a Pillow

You can turn any quilt block into a throw pillow using an easy envelope backing!

I love this method because it makes it easy to swap out pillow covers for each season or holiday without needing to purchase extra pillow forms.

And with some very basic math, you can make this work for any quilt block — just sew an extra block using a pattern for a larger quilt you’re making and you instantly have a coordinating pillow to go with your quilt.

Note: Aim to have your quilt block the size of a standard pillow form. Some of the most common sizes are 16" square, 18" square, 20" square, 12" x 18", and 14" x 20". If you need, add borders to your block to make it a standard size.

Cutting for an Envelope Pillow Backing

See the basic math below to cut the backing pieces needed to make your envelope pillow backing.

Note: Don't use the "finished" measurements of your block -- use the actual measurements that include the seam allowance.

Helpful Tools

While not required, I find these tools helpful when making my pillow backings. (Click to shop)

Wonder Clips: This pin alternative holds bulky layers in place and is easy to remove when sewing. (You can also use these clips to hold binding in place while sewing!)

Hera Marker: A hera marker is easier to mark your cozies for quilting and darts than an ink marker, because it doesn't drag or get caught on the batting when marking. I use my hera marker to mark quilting lines on my quilts and diagonal lines on triangle-squares, too!

Thanks for joining me for "happy hour"! I hope you give this method a try!
